Sony announces global price cuts to PlayStation 3

Sony has announced that it will reduce the price of its PlayStation 3 console by £50 in the UK followed by similar reductions around the World. The changes in the prices are with immediate effect in North America and Europe, however Japan will see price reductions from this Thursday.

The retail recommended price in North America for the PS3 with 160GB hard drive will now cost $249 whilst the PS3 with 320GB hard drive will cost $299. Europe will see a price reduction of €50, this now makes the PS3 with 160GB hard drive priced at €249 and €299 for 320 GB model.

Sony announced the news at the Gamescom conference currently underway in Cologne, Germany.

Sony is looking to attract users purchasing its PS3 with these price reductions and compete with Microsoft’s Xbox 360. If Sony is successful with increasing its PS3 sales then there should be an increase in number of games being purchased in the immediate months. Nintendo also recently reduced its 3DS price in anticipation of boosting sales.

Sony also announced its new PSP model at the Gamescom conference which we will bring you more info shortly.

If both the Xbox 360 and PS3 were priced at the same price which one would you buy and why?
